There are indications that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal will today defect from the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress(APC). According to Leadership report, Tambuwal will read his defection letter on the floor of the lower chamber at plenary.
But contrary to widely-held belief, Tambuwal will not resign his position as speaker of the House neither will he lose his membership.
Reports had surfaced last week that the lawmaker had defected to the APC after he attended a stakeholders’ meeting of the APC in Sokoto, where Governor Wamakko disclosed that the speaker was just bidding his time in the PDP.
Tambuwal had however said he was still consulting.
It was gathered that the consultations are over and Tambuwal has made all the necessary arrangements to join the APC and contest for governorship position in Skokoto come 2015.

Speaking on the matter, a source close to the speaker said Tambuwal has been under a lot of pressure from close political associates, youth groups, women groups, elders and members of the public to defect to the APC and contest for Sokoto governorship and he has decided to the bidding of the public.
“He has concluded arrangements to move to the APC, and we all know that is the right thing for him to do now. The law allows him to defect to another party without losing his membership of the House or his seat as the speaker of the House.
“The law said the speaker can defect as long as there is factionalisation in his party. If there aren’t factionalisations in the party, will Anenih be in Sokoto to lead a reconciliatory committee and will not Sokoto State governor Wamakko still be in the PDP?” the source said.

The source explained that the governorship ticket had been zoned to Tambuwal’s area and the people wanted a man like Tambuwal, who had national and international pedigree to take the state forward to replace the outgoing governor.
When contacted, Tambuwal’s media, Imam Imam, said the speaker would soon make his position on the issue public.
“My boss has always been open in his dealings and his politics is not an exception. Very soon, he will tell Nigerians his decision,” Imam said.
Tambuwal’s defection to the APC has long been expected by many as his body language and political affiliations had always portrayed a politician on the verge of decamping.
Tambuwal, has been reportedly meeting secretly with top politicians from the North in an attempt to accomplish its ambition.
